I don't know if you've noticed, but the social media landscape has rapidly changed in the last three years, not to mention when these platforms first became popular.
Who remembers the old Instagram icons?
Yep, we're that old.
Several years ago, it was the trend to do something stupid in the hopes of going 'viral'. It mattered how many followers you had and if you were doing the Harlem Shake. Well, I'm here to say those days are behind us.
From a small business perspective, you don't WANT to go viral, and here's why.
While going viral could mean you are seen by thousands of people, that is worthless unless they are your target audience. Ask yourself these questions:
Would these people pay for your product/service?
Are they within your desired demographic? I.e. if you don't have a virtual store, are they from the region where your business is?
If you had a successful post, have all of those people since followed your page and interacted with your content?
If the answer is no, then it is pointless. Yes, there is an odd chance that they will remember exactly what you do/offer, and will pass it along to your ideal client. However, the chances are much higher that they have stumbled across you while they scroll, have laughed, liked it and maybe even shared it with their friends. Then they have moved on with their lives.
Now, you are no closer to increasing your ROI (Return on Investment), even though it had been seen by thousands of people. Your goal should not be about going viral, but creating quality content your ideal audience will interact with, enjoy, and follow you for more. If your targeted audience is engaged, your conversion rate will increase. If you want to know more about nurturing your online community to grow your brand, let's chat!
